Among this minority ethnic, some of the popular ethnics like Tay, Thai, Muong, Hoa, Khmer, Nung... with a population around 1 million each, while some other small group like Brau, Ro Mam, O Du with the population only several hundred of people.
These ethnics are very different in languages, customs, costumes, traditions and life styles. But in the history of Vietnam as well as modern life, the ethnic groups in Vietnam have always had a tradition of solidarity and mutual assistance, particularly in the struggle against foreign aggessors. They all use Vietnamese as the common language to communicate and received very special care from government, especially in education and healthcare.
The Viet people succeeded in establishing a centralized monarchy back in the 10th century. The Cham people once boasted a flourishing culture early our history. The Tay, Nung, and Khmer peoples had reached high levels of development with the presence of various social strata. The Muong, H'Mong, Dao, Thai peoples... gathered under the rule of local tribal heads. Many ethnic groups divided their population into social echelons, especially those who lived in mountainous areas.

Many of ethnic minorities are very good at farming and rice cultivation such as Mong people in their amazing technique of cultivate and irrigate wet rice on the terrace rice filed in the North of Vietnam. They are also very good at fishing, hunting, collecting and lived a semi-nomadic life. Each group has its own culture, diverse and special. Beliefs and religions of the Vietnamese ethnic minority groups were also disparate from each other.
The hill tribe people in Vietnam attract the travelers by their beautiful life style and costumes. Most of them are still keeping their tradition, wearing original costumes and living in their traditional houses. Visit their villages, you can experience their customs and culture as well as discover their amazing handicraft, mostly amazing in their traditional brocade such as embroidery and batik technique of Mong people, the unique wood carving of Giarai or Ede people in their tomb in the central highland, the unique culture of gong music of Muong in the North and Bana people in the Central Highland
